It&#8217;s barely visible in the photo, but the satin stitch is angled this way and that to create something that looks a little like a <a title=\"About the Marcel Wave\" href=\"http:\/\/www.1920-30.com\/fashion\/hairstyles\/marcel-wave.html\" target=\"_blank\">Marcel wave <\/a>&#8211; a very grown up style on a relatively young girl!<\/p>\n<p>As in the first installment, the cuffs and flounces are in <a title=\"Blanket Stitch on Stitch School blog\" href=\"http:\/\/stitchschool.blogspot.co.uk\/2009\/12\/blanket-stitch.html\" target=\"_blank\">blanket stitch<\/a>. The spots are <a title=\"French knots on the Embroiderer's Guild website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/french.html\" target=\"_blank\">French knots<\/a>, and the lilac dress is worked as a pattern of <a title=\"Back Stitch on the Embroiderer's Guild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/back.html\" target=\"_blank\">back stitches<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5248\" style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Reading.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5248\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5248\" alt=\"Reading\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Reading-296x300.jpg\" width=\"296\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Reading-296x300.jpg 296w, https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Reading.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5248\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reading<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This motif, &#8220;Reading&#8221; shows particularly clearly how skilled the designer was in making the best possible use of simple shapes and simple line. Much of the design uses <a title=\"Straight Stitches on the Embroiderer's Guild website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/straight.html\" target=\"_blank\">straight stitches<\/a> &#8211; for the leaves, the bark, and the stems of the leaves.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern on the skirt alternates <a title=\"Back Stitch on the Embroiderer's Guild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/back.html\" target=\"_blank\">back stitches<\/a> with tiny <a title=\"Satin Stitch diagram at the Embroiderer's Guild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/satin.html\" target=\"_blank\">satin stitch<\/a> blocks, and the hair is <a title=\"Stem Stitch at the Embroiderer's Guild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/stem.html\" target=\"_blank\">stem stitch<\/a>. The shorts are actually woven! It must have been tricky to get right, but it&#8217;s worked really well &#8211; they look slightly tweedy, but in any case the sort of heavy fabric that any sensible mother would clothe her child in for scrambling around rocks and beaches.<\/p>\n<p>The little gold fish is worked in <a title=\"Vandyke Stitch on The BigB blog\" href=\"http:\/\/bigbgsd.blogspot.co.uk\/2010\/02\/100-stitches-vandyke-stitch.html\" target=\"_blank\">Vandyke stitch<\/a>, which is tricky to keep even but creates a strong line down the side of the fish to contrast with the net in the background.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now this is very &#8220;Swallows and Amazons&#8220;, isn&#8217;t it!
