This is a technique that I don&#8217;t necessarily use very often, but it is always one I consider, because heathering is such a good way to create subtle variations in colour and tone. There&#8217;s a nice example of this on <a title=\"Dragonfly post on The Flossbox blog\" href=\"http:\/\/theflossbox.blogspot.co.uk\/2012\/04\/dragonfly-stumpwork-embroidery.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Floss Box blog<\/a>, where the thread for the water is blended in the needle.<\/p>\n<p>The veins are marked in <a title=\"Thorn Stitch from TAST 2007 on Quieter Moments\" href=\"http:\/\/quietermoments.wordpress.com\/2007\/11\/19\/tstc-week-47-the-thorn-stitch\/\" target=\"_blank\">Thorn Stitch<\/a>, although I&#8217;ve just noticed that the central vein is in Chain Stitch!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5234\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ForgetmeNots.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5234\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5234\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ForgetmeNots-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Forget-Me-Nots\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ForgetmeNots-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ForgetmeNots.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5234\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Forget-Me-Nots<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The forget-me-knots and attached leaves and stems are almost a sampler all by themselves. The leaves and stems are worked in <a title=\"Coral Stitch at the Embroiderer's Guild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/coral.html\" target=\"_blank\">Coral Stitch<\/a>, which also outlines the flowers. Inside the flowers, there are tiny circles of <a title=\"Rosette Chain Stitch on Sharon B's stitch dictionary\" href=\"http:\/\/inaminuteago.com\/stitchdict\/stitch\/Chain-rosette.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rosette Chain Stitches<\/a>, worked around a <a title=\"Buttonhole Wheel on Sharon B's stitch dictionary\" href=\"http:\/\/inaminuteago.com\/stitchdict\/stitch\/buttonhole-wheel.html\" target=\"_blank\">Buttonhole Wheel<\/a> in golden yellow. Rosette chain looks better worked rather bigger than this &#8211; I&#8217;ve used it since in <a title=\"My Blog Posts mentioning Rosette Chain Stitch\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/?s=rosette+chain\" target=\"_blank\">several projects<\/a> &#8211; and those who followed my posts on the <a title=\"Posts tagged &quot;Tudor and Stuart Goldwork Masterclass&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/tag\/tudor-and-stuart-goldwork-masterclass\/\" target=\"_blank\">Goldwork Masterclass<\/a> will know by now that I have since developed a positive obsession with stitch and fabric scale!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5231\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/FeatherStitchTulip.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5231\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5231 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/FeatherStitchTulip.jpg\" alt=\"Feather Stitch Tulip\" width=\"300\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Feather Stitch Tulip<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Tulip is filled with close rows of <a title=\"Feather Stitch on Sharon B's stitch dictionary\" href=\"http:\/\/inaminuteago.com\/stitchdict\/stitch\/buttonhole-feather.html\" target=\"_blank\">Feather Stitch<\/a> in red and golden yellow, outlined with stem stitch. It creates a slightly odd texture that I&#8217;m not entirely unhappy with, although it would balance the other flowers better if the filling were not so closely packed, and the colours were rather paler.<\/p>\n<p>The stem is worked in a single row of chain stitch with a row of stem stitch on each side.
