I think I must have talked with Grandmama and looked at some of her embroidery, and it looks as though suddenly the whole idea &#8220;clicked&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The motifs are from transfers from another of Grandmama&#8217;s <a title=\"Posts tagged &quot;Needlewoman Magazine&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/tag\/needlewoman-magazine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Needlewoman Magazines<\/a> (August 1934, if you are interested!), worked on an old piece of linen in stranded cottons. The design was suggested to be a cover for a photograph album, but since my family isn&#8217;t really photograph-conscious, I felt that such a thing would be superfluous, and finished it as a traycloth instead. We added the seagull to cover a hole in the linen, which was already quite old.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5249\" style=\"width: 239px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Rockpooling.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5249\" class=\" wp-image-5249\" alt=\"Rockpooling with Toto\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Rockpooling-207x300.jpg\" width=\"229\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Rockpooling-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Rockpooling.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5249\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rockpooling with Toto<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The range of stitches is very limited on this piece &#8211; I must have been following the instructions in the magazine &#8211; and the whole thing is surprisingly neatly worked. I love the little girl&#8217;s spotty dress (<a title=\"Satin Stitch diagram at the Embroiderer's Guild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/satin.html\" target=\"_blank\">satin stitch<\/a> spots!) and windswept <a title=\"Stem Stitch at the Embroiderer's Guild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/stem.html\" target=\"_blank\">stem stitch<\/a> hair, and the starfish is wonderfully knobbly, with closely packed <a title=\"French knots on the Embroiderer's Guild website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/french.html\" target=\"_blank\">French knots<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the outlining across the whole piece is in <a title=\"Back Stitch on the Embroiderer's Guild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/back.html\" target=\"_blank\">back stitch<\/a>, and although I didn&#8217;t count it precisely, I suspect the weave of the linen made that much easier to do than it might have been.<\/p>\n<p>The designs themselves are very reminiscent of the children&#8217;s books of the period &#8211; it&#8217;s even exactly the right sort of dog, slightly scruffy, but always ready to play!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5253\" style=\"width: 283px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walkers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5253\" class=\" wp-image-5253\" alt=\"Walkers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walkers-254x300.jpg\" width=\"273\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walkers-254x300.jpg 254w, https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Walkers.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Walkers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>These walkers have <a title=\"Blanket Stitch on Stitch School blog\" href=\"http:\/\/stitchschool.blogspot.co.uk\/2009\/12\/blanket-stitch.html\" target=\"_blank\">blanket stitch<\/a> collars and cuffs, and <a title=\"Stem Stitch at the Embroiderer's Guild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/stem.html\" target=\"_blank\">stem stitch<\/a> hair. His shorts are worked in <a title=\"Jacobean Couching on The BigB blog\" href=\"http:\/\/bigbgsd.blogspot.co.uk\/2011\/07\/100-stitches-trellis-or-jacobean.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jacobean Couching<\/a> and the spots on her skirt are <a title=\"French knots on the Embroiderer's Guild website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/french.html\" target=\"_blank\">French knots<\/a>. The leaves on the bush in the background are <a title=\"Detached Chain Stitch at the Embroiderer's Guild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/detached.html\" target=\"_blank\">detached chain<\/a>, and the yellow flowers are <a title=\"Blanket Stitch Wheels on Sarah's Hand Embroidery Tutorials\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroidery.rocksea.org\/stitch\/blanket-stitch\/buttonhole-wheel\/\" target=\"_blank\">blanket stitch wheels<\/a>. Again, the hair is in <a title=\"Stem Stitch at the Embroiderer's Guild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/stem.html\" target=\"_blank\">stem stitch<\/a> and the socks (like the little girl&#8217;s shoes) are in <a title=\"Satin Stitch at the Embroiderer's Guild\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embroiderersguild.com\/stitch\/stitches\/satin.html\" target=\"_blank\">satin stitch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll notice that all of these stitches re-occur when I describe the other motifs, too.
