In the past when I have started with leaves and flowers, the whole design has remained &#8220;spotty&#8221; and unconnected, and I don&#8217;t feel that I&#8217;m making progress.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/BranchesDone_Watermarked.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/BranchesDone_Watermarked-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Doesn't look much, does it? Branches in place, everything else only drawn in\n\" class=\"wp-image-16195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/BranchesDone_Watermarked-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/BranchesDone_Watermarked-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/BranchesDone_Watermarked.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s so dispiriting that these days, I do the branches first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve used soft cotton in a warm pinky-brown, and chose one of my favourite stitches, <a href=\"https:\/\/rsnstitchbank.org\/stitch\/portuguese-knotted-stem-stitch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Portuguese Knotted Stem Stitch<\/a> (link to the RSN stitch bank entry). It leaps forward very satisfyingly, so it didn&#8217;t take me long, once I got a chance to settle down to it, to get the branches done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t entirely paying attention.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SpaceForTail_Watermarked.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"283\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SpaceForTail_Watermarked-283x300.jpg\" alt=\"A gap in the branch for a birds tail..\" class=\"wp-image-16198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SpaceForTail_Watermarked-283x300.jpg 283w, https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SpaceForTail_Watermarked-768x815.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SpaceForTail_Watermarked.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I remembered to leave a gap for one of the bird&#8217;s tails, but not the other. And as I look at my other choices of thread, this pinky brown has no other friends. So I may decide, at a later date, to remove part of the branch stitching to allow for tails and feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have a slight fear that I may even have to remove all of it. I love Portuguese Knotted Stem Stitch, but it is full of personality, and if I don&#8217;t get the balance right in the rest of the stitching it might unbalance the whole thing!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You have to start somewhere, don&#8217;t you!
