This time I&#8217;m aiming for a little drawstring bag. When I was casting around for an idea for the design, among other things I leafed through my copy of &#8220;Jane Austen Embroidery&#8221;. I traced one of the more complicated designs, and then realised that I wanted to use that for something else, and thought again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Add-Watermark_2021_11_09_05_55_27-8.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"281\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Add-Watermark_2021_11_09_05_55_27-8-281x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13611\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Add-Watermark_2021_11_09_05_55_27-8-281x300.jpg 281w, https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Add-Watermark_2021_11_09_05_55_27-8-768x819.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Add-Watermark_2021_11_09_05_55_27-8.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I went back to some of the thoughts I had when we were doing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/2016\/02\/23\/the-great-ladys-magazine-stitch-off-3\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9648\">Great Lady&#8217;s Magazine StitchOff<\/a>, and decided that since it is a small and limited project, it seemed to me that freestyling the embroidery would be fairly low risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tacked out the outlines of the bag, weighted the book open so I could see the drawing of one of the sprig patterns, and went rummaging among my threads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Add-Watermark_2021_11_09_05_55_27-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Add-Watermark_2021_11_09_05_55_27-2-300x282.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Add-Watermark_2021_11_09_05_55_27-2-300x282.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Add-Watermark_2021_11_09_05_55_27-2-768x721.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Add-Watermark_2021_11_09_05_55_27-2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve made use of some linen threads from Stef Francis, and some silk threads from I-know-not-where, and the stitches are mostly very simple: chain stitch, stem stitch, fishbone stitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it came to the bell-shaped flowers at the bottom, I didn&#8217;t want to use satin stitch, and I spent some time racking my brains to come up with an alternative. Finally, inspiration came from two long-ago projects, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/2013\/10\/08\/kai-lung-of-the-golden-hours\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4561\">Kai Lung<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.virtuosewadventures.co.uk\/wordpress\/2010\/03\/16\/the-persian-fantasy-finished\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"308\">Persian Fantasy Screen<\/a>, and it occurred to me to use nested fly stitches.
